"Golden Rose of Baden-Baden" 2025
On June 17, 2025, the internationally renowned honorary award “Golden Rose of Baden-Baden” was presented to a Floribunda rose named Orienta Milya in Baden-Baden. It was bred by the German rose nursery Tantau, based in Uetersen.
This rose was named the best rose of the year in Germany’s only international competition for new rose varieties. The new cultivar impressed the jury with its abundance of dark yellow, single-petaled blooms featuring five raspberry-colored spots and a striking display of stamens. It has fresh green foliage and shows excellent leaf health.
With Orienta Milya, a Persica hybrid has won the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden for the first time. Persica hybrids stem from a breeding line that combines a wild Persian rose from Iran with garden roses. Orienta Milya also received a gold medal in the Floribunda rose category. Baden-Baden’s Lord Mayor, Dietmar Späth, presented the “Golden Rose” and the gold medal during the award ceremony in the Gönneranlage to Jens Krüger, Head of Breeding at Tantau.
For the 73rd New Rose Variety Competition in Baden-Baden, more than 70 rose experts and breeders from 15 countries gathered in the Rose Novelty Garden on the Beutig hill on June 17 to evaluate 141 new rose varieties from 31 breeders.
The most distinguished guest on competition day was Sushil Prakash from India, the new President of the World Federation of Rose Societies. The international jury was chaired by Sanda Simic from Vancouver, Canada. Rose specialists from across Europe as well as Canada, India, China, and the United States took part in the competition.
