Strolling through the heart of European culture

The Lichtentaler Allee

Anyone who takes a stroll along Lichtentaler Allee will immediately understand why it is regarded as the heart of Baden-Baden. Stretching for around three kilometres, it links the historic old town with Lichtenthal Abbey – nestled amidst magnificent gardens and flanked by the gentle flow of the River Oos. Here, nature, culture and history come together. Mature trees provide shade, flowers enchant the senses, and art and architecture speak of the spirit of bygone eras.

Beginning at the Kurhaus & Casino – An elegant start

At the upper entrance to Lichtentaler Allee stands the magnificent Kurhaus Baden-Baden, surrounded by splendid colonnades, fragrant flower beds and the imposing casino – once described as the most beautiful in the world. It is here that the journey into another world begins: stylish, peaceful, inspiring.

Tip: A quick detour to the spa gardens or a look at the impressive architecture of the Kurhaus is well worth it.

Museum Mile – Art meets nature

Just a few steps further on, the path opens up into the world of art: the Museum Frieder Burda, designed by star architect Richard Meier, is connected to the Staatliche Kunsthalle by a glass bridge. A few steps further on, the City Museum invites visitors to discover Baden-Baden’s eventful history. The LA8 – Society House for Art and Culture – completes the ensemble.

Gönneranlage – Roses that tell stories

The park Gönneranlage is a treat for all the senses. Over 10,000 rose bushes of some 400 varieties bloom here – a fragrant, colourful garden brimming with romance. Originally created as a gift from the ‘Coffee King’ Hermann Sielcken to his wife, it is now a place of tranquillity, wonder and daydreaming.

Dahlia Garden – A riot of colour in late summer

In the southern section of Lichtentaler Allee, a spectacular display of colour unfolds from late summer onwards: the Dahlia Garden. Over 70 varieties in vibrant shades of yellow, orange, pink and red compete to bloom here – a tribute to the diversity of nature. The garden was originally laid out as an experimental site and has developed over the years into one of the city’s most popular photo spots.

Tip: Admission is free – and an early evening visit in the soft light is particularly worthwhile.

Lumen Kiosk at the "Hirtenhäuschen"– A short break, plenty of charm

In the lovingly restored shepherd’s cottage "Hirtenhäuschen" dating from 1793, once a resting place for the imperial couple, the Lumen kiosk now invites you to enjoy a delightful break.

Whether it’s coffee, ice cream, waffles or the famous Lumen cinnamon buns – everything is served with a smile and in sustainable, reusable packaging. A place where history and indulgence come together in the simplest of ways.

And anyone who takes a seat here beneath the old trees will quickly understand why even emperors loved to linger here.

Kloster Lichtenthal – Spiritual tranquillity & hospitality

At the end of the avenue, the monastery Kloster Lichthental awaits you; a place of tranquillity and spirituality since 1245. The Baroque church and the small monastery shop offer a glimpse into centuries-old traditions.

At Café Lumen in the monastery courtyard, you can enjoy homemade cakes, fine coffee and regional delicacies under ancient trees – the perfect way to round off your stroll along Lichtentaler Allee.
